On Master Pages and Visual Web Developer Express

Ugh, there's a bug in Visual Web Developer Express 2008, you need to open the master page AND HAVE THAT BE THE ONLY FILE THAT'S OPEN in order to open content pages that are based on the master page and use the "display" mode. Lame.

Fix for InDesign CS3 constantly crashing when launched from PMP

Scott taught me this one. Well, actually, Scott taught Kris and Kris taught me.

Every now and then PMP will be unable to open InDesign documents. Easy fix. Just delete from…
/Macintosh HD/Users/[username]/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 5.0
…the following two items…
InDesign Recovery (folder)
InDesign SavedData (file)
…works fine.
This fix is for CS3 only, CS2 has its own fix for this problem. Hopefully I'll never need the CS2 fix.

Multiple User Profiles in Google Chrome

I've started two separate google reader accounts because I want to browse them in different ways. One contains news, and I want to be able to fly through that stuff and have it marked as read automatically. The other account is podcasts and I don't want those marked as read until I'm done with them. So, I have two accounts that use different behavior.

Here are the steps I performed to create multiple profiles using Google Chrome, allowing me to have quick access to two Google Reader setups. (I found a description of how this is done here)

Step 1: Clear browsing history and data (if you want to)

Step 2: Copy folder "C:Users[username]AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser DataDefault" to a new folder in the same location (I called mine Podcasts)

Step 3: Set new profile to factory settings (if you want to) by running c:Users[username]AppDataLocalGoogleChromeApplicationchrome.exe –user-data-dir="C:Users[username]AppDataLocalGoogleChromeUser DataPodcasts" -first-run

Step 4: Create an app shortcut for Google Reader using Chrome and edit it to add the –user-data-dir= directory from above.

Boom! Done!

Now I have a shortcut (that I put in the Start Menu) I can use to get right at my podcasts…no browser navigation or passwords necessary. Once that profile has the right cookies it just works!

Refreshing Group Policy

A note for me: To refresh a machine policy just run gpupdate.exe

Thumbs.db on Network Shares with Vista, Grrrrr…..

According to Microsoft, Vista doesn't use thumbs.db anymore, so the problem of thumbs.db getting created on network shares has been fixed. But, then Microsoft broke it again with Vista SP1.
Next registry edit, diabling thumbs.db from showing up on my Mac network shares. Here's a quote…
– Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
– Navigate to the following registry branch: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced
-On the right pane, double click on DisableThumbnailCache value, and set its value data as 1. If the registry key of – DisableThumbnailCache does not exists, create a new DWORD value with that name.
– Logoff and login again, or restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
…boom. No more Thumbs.db.

The Places Bar

I found a way to edit the Places Bar (You know, the folders on the left side of the open and save dialog) in XP and it works for Vista as well. Basically go here…
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion Policiescomdlg32Placesbar
…and edit the locations; DWORDS are common locations, so you'll have to look them up, but strings are just paths to folders. The max is 5 (Place0 through Place4). Here's a link to an article describing it.

Apache Doesn't Start After System Restart

Linux web server restart problem…
cd /etc/apache/
httpd -t httpd.conf
[which websites are "missing", comment them out in httpd.conf]
apachectl restart
…Had a power outage today which means our linux web server went down. And, once again, the web server didn't start because it couldn't find all the web sites listed in it's config file. To make a long story short, I went to /etc/apache/httpd.conf and ran… httpd -t httpd.conf …this told me that it couldn't find two of the websites listed in /etc/apache/httpd.conf. It also said that it "Cannot remove module mod_log_config.c" but I don't know what that's all about, and it doesn't matter.  I commented out the two websites (with #) and typed… apachectl restart …and that fixed it.

Fix for InDesign CS2 constantly crashing when launched from PMP

Problem: InDesign CS2 crashes every time I try to open an ad from PMP.
Solution: Delete…
/Users/username/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/Version 4.0/InDesign SavedData
Boom! Delete it and you're back in business.

Add Eject Menu to Mac Menu Bar

To add an eject menu to the Mac OSX menu bar go to HD/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Eject.menu, double click that and you can eject your cd tray from the menu bar. Wonderful! (especially for those of us that don't have an eject button on the keyboard)
Also, to remove the menu once it's installed hold down the option key and drag the menu off the menu bar.
